The design process
The process of creating a Sciortino masterpiece is a labor of love. Tailors undertake some 20 different measures for a man’s suit and 23 measurements for a woman’s suit.
The customer first comes into the shop and the body type is assessed to determine the type of cut best suited to the physique of the individual.
The customer will peruse fabric books with swatches or bolts (large cuts) of fabric in stock. Using these bolts, Vincent or one of his assistants will recommend colors and textures that complement one’s skin tone. This process more effectively aids the customer in visualizing the effect of the suit against their skin. Most customers find this process easier than simply taking a look at small swatches.
After the fabric is chosen, measurements are taken and custom pattern is prepared.
Once the pattern is made initial suit cut and assembly will take approximately 2 weeks at which point the rough-basted suit is ready for the first of several fittings.
Care is taken in all steps of the process; even the thread that Sciortino uses is critical. The shop uses only pure cotton or silk threads. For each buttonhole (hand-stiched of course) there are approximately 150 stitches. This custom attention yields a product that fits exactly right… “every line matches, the buttons line up perfectly” says Vincent.
